Randy Johnston

Randy Johnston is an entertaining guy with an engaging way of presenting himself. Author of the regional bestseller, Robbed at Pen Point, the Dallas malpractice attorney often warns people about scammers who perpetuate legal malpractice, stockbroker/investment fraud, accounting and money management malpractice and many other financial shenanigans on unknowing consumers.

When promoting his book, Randy is often asked, “What is the next big scam that you see on the horizon?” His answer: “The one you haven’t seen yet. These scammers and financial hit men are much quicker at developing new schemes than you are at uncovering them.”

When addressing groups, Randy often uses his guitar to get his point across. He plays with a Dallas blues band, Blue Collar Crime, and sometimes sings a ballad that describes what his practice is all about. He assumes the responsibility to protect people from those who steal your money with signatures on documents, using legal and accounting degrees, stockbroker licenses and money management certifications.

Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Randy handles cases involving professional malpractice as well as business disputes. Randy is featured in D Magazine as one of the city's best in the difficult field of legal malpractice litigation. He is also a Texas Super Lawyer chosen by his peers and featured in Texas Monthly as one of the 100 Top Attorneys in Texas (Thomson Reuters 2010-2011).

For years he contributed material on legal ethics to Texas Lawyer and publishes a blog to instruct his fellow attorneys on avoiding malpractice titled TexasEthicalPractice.com. "Everyone hates his lawyer when he loses a case or his stockbroker, accountant or money manager when his money goes south," Randy says. "I'm here to determine which of these incidents are outside the law. I'm like a traffic cop pulling over the worst offenders."

Randy is best described as an individualist with exceptional talent. His friends and adversaries know that, and they realize that his eclectic abilities and highly refined work ethic make him a formidable foe in the courtroom or in negotiations. He grew up in West Texas, went to Brigham Young University on a track scholarship and earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law.

Randy is a published poet, a songwriter, an accomplished water skier and a Harley rider. He is the father of eight children and reports that all of his kids are out of the house now and at least self sufficient “for a time.”

A reporter for a Park Cities newspaper called his home a shrine to the blues. Randy’s extensive guitar collection and pictures of blues artists adorn the walls, and a stage is built into the den. Randy plays rhythm and slide guitar for his band, which plays before substantial crowds at several local venues. He usually contributes his earnings to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“Music makes me a better lawyer,” Randy says. “It demands incredible discipline as well as enhancing my creative side. I use music to keep everyone listening to the things they need to know in this economy.”
