For more than two decades now, the authors have practiced together as Johnston Tobey, P.C. Their offices are at 3308 Oak Grove Avenue in the Uptown section of Dallas.
Randy Johnston and Robert Tobey assume the responsibility to protect people from those who steal money with signatures on documents, using legal and accounting degrees, stockbroker licenses and money management certifications.
Randy Johnston is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and handles cases involving professional malpractice as well as business disputes.
He is regularly featured in D Magazine as one of the city’s best in the difficult field of legal malpractice litigation. He is one of the Top 100 attorneys in Texas chosen by his peers (Thomson Reuters 2010) and featured in Texas Monthly.
“Everyone hates his lawyer when he loses a case or his stockbroker, accountant or money manager when his money goes south,” Randy says. “I’m here to determine which of these incidents are outside the law. I’m like a traffic cop pulling over the worst offenders.”
He grew up in West Texas, went to Brigham Young University on a track scholarship and earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law.
Randy plays rhythm and slide guitar and sings occasional vocals in Blue Collar Crime, a band he describes as four lawyers and one guitar legend who needs four lawyers. He also plays acoustic guitar with the group TWIG.
“Music makes me a better lawyer,” Randy says. “It demands incredible discipline as well as enhancing my creative side. Getting to play music is my reward for doing the best possible job for our clients.”
Randy also uses music in many of the speaking engagements he gets each year. He is featured on LawTalkTexas.com and has written several songs that talk about the scams and schemes that corrupt individuals use to steal money from the public. He is the author of “Robbed at Pen Point” and talks about the latest scams in his presentations. Robert Tobey is a master at preparing cases for trial, arbitration or settlement. He does most of the firm’s trial preparation, whether he litigates the case himself, he hands it off to Randy Johnston or they handle the case together.
“His attention to detail is phenomenal,” says his partner. “He is extremely loyal to our clients and he never lets his ego interfere with effective representation of those clients.”
Robert is Board Certified in Consumer and Commercial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a specialization that requires a broad knowledge of civil law. He has been honored as a Texas Super Lawyer and one of the Best Lawyers in Dallas (D Magazine 2012).
A 1980 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, Robert began his undergraduate work at Southern Methodist University and earned a degree in economics at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He was associated with two Dallas law firms before joining Randy Johnston in a litigation practice in 1987. Perhaps Robert’s best recommendation is the testimonial he received from a client who was defrauded by an investment company until Robert made it right.
“Our situation was desperate until Robert Tobey took the case,” he said. “It was just Robert against a roomful of lawyers on the other side. And he outsmarted all of them.”
